You can find phlebotomy classes online that give prospective students the basics as to what is needed to get the
right kind of phlebotomy training certification.
If you don’t already know, phlebotomy is the medical field in which you take a needle and extract blood from the
patient. The purpose of this could be for either testing of the blood or for transfusion.
You do need a high school diploma or GED equivalent before you can apply for phlebotomy classes online. Most of
the online courses can be completed usually within three months if you are taking the class, full time. If
you plan on getting an associates degree in phlebotomy, it might take you as much as 20 months. A bachelors degree
obviously will take you 4 years.
The program usually consists of learning about anatomy, physiology, and obviously phlebotomy practices.
Beyond that, you are going to learn the social and communication proficiencies that are critical to deal with the
patients. You want to be able to make this procedure as painless as possible, and have the patient be able to
trust you.
You’ll be getting hands on training with drawing blood through the process of venipuncture through your lab
courses, and your clinical internships of the program.
As far as the kind of jobs you can expect, phlebotomists work in clinics and medical offices helping both
doctors and nurses. You will most likely get the most work done in blood clinics for obvious reasons. Your
job may or may not extend to performing other tasks that are not related to drawing blood, depending on your
employer.
With certain phlebotomy internships, it is possible that you are going to have to get CPR certification
(depending on the program).
Currently, the only state that does not require phlebotomy certification is California.
No matter which way you choose phlebotomy is a wonderful field to enter in the medical industry.
